Bacopa Monnieri Extract

NootropiccognitiveStrong dose evidence

Also known as: Bacopa monniera, Brahmi, water hyssop, bacosides

Add to a formula

An extract of a creeping wetland herb from traditional Indian practice, standardized to bacosides, that is one of the better-studied botanical nootropics for memory. A meta-analysis of randomized trials found improvements in attention and speed of processing after extended supplementation. Unlike stimulant-style nootropics, bacopa is slow-acting: benefits typically emerge after eight to twelve weeks of daily use, so it suits daily cognitive formulas rather than acute pre-work products.

Research summary

Bacosides are proposed to support cholinergic signaling and dendritic branching while providing antioxidant activity in neural tissue.

Dosage

Daily amounts, of extract.

Lowest studiedTypical rangeHighest studiedUpper limit
300 mg300–450 mg450 mg

300 to 450 mg per day of a 50% bacoside extract, taken with food to reduce stomach upset, which is the most common complaint. Expect an onset of eight to twelve weeks; acute single doses are not well supported. Some users report mild fatigue early on.

Standardization: 50% bacosides

Source material: whole-plant extract

Format suitability

  • Capsule
  • Powder
  • Tablet
  • Softgel
  • Gummy
  • Liquid

Bitter and somewhat grassy; difficult to mask in gummies.

Formulation notes

Commonly combined with lion's mane, ginkgo, or phosphatidylserine in memory stacks. Branded forms (Bacognize, Synapsa) use different standardization methods, so compare bacoside assays carefully.
