A non-essential amino acid that combines with histidine to form carnosine, the main intramuscular buffer of hydrogen ions during intense exercise. Consistent daily use raises muscle carnosine over several weeks and is studied for performance in efforts lasting roughly one to four minutes, such as rowing, sprinting, and high-rep sets. It is a core pre-workout ingredient and is known for a harmless tingling sensation at higher single doses.

Paresthesia (tingling of the face and hands) is common at single doses above about 800 mg and fades within an hour; splitting the daily total into 0.8–1.6 g servings or using a sustained-release form reduces it. Benefits persist while daily dosing continues.
