A free-form blend of all nine essential amino acids, typically leucine-weighted, that provides the complete substrate for muscle protein synthesis without the bulk of a full protein serving. Small EAA doses stimulate muscle protein synthesis roughly as well as much larger whole-protein doses, which makes EAAs useful in intra-workout, low-calorie, and older-adult formulas. Quality is determined by total EAA content and leucine share.

Research has used 6–15 g of free EAAs per serving, with leucine making up about 35–40% of the blend. A 10 g serving with 3.5–4 g leucine matches the anabolic effect of a 25–30 g whey serving. Many commercial blends are diluted with non-essential amino acids, so specify the EAA fraction when sourcing.
