Lycopene is the red carotenoid that gives tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit their color. Unlike beta-carotene it has no vitamin A activity, so it is used purely as an antioxidant. Pooled trials of lycopene supplementation report a modest reduction in systolic blood pressure, and it is common in heart, prostate, and skin formulas. Commercial lycopene comes from tomato oleoresin or fermentation and is fat-soluble.

Intervention trials pooled in cardiovascular meta-analyses generally used tens of milligrams per day; 10–30 mg daily is the range in most products. Fat-soluble; absorption is higher from oil-based forms taken with food. Serum lycopene rises over weeks.
