Tocotrienols
Also known as: tocotrienol complex, delta-tocotrienol, gamma-tocotrienol, annatto tocotrienols, palm tocotrienol-rich fraction, TRF
Tocotrienols are the four unsaturated members of the vitamin E family (alpha, beta, gamma, delta), distinguished from tocopherols by a three-double-bond side chain that lets them move through membranes more freely. They are concentrated from palm oil or annatto seed, with annatto grades being nearly tocopherol-free. Studied mostly for cardiovascular, inflammatory, and oxidative-stress markers, they are positioned as a specialty vitamin E rather than a source of RDA vitamin E, since only alpha-tocopherol meets the human requirement.
Research summary
Lipid-phase antioxidants that also down-regulate HMG-CoA reductase activity and inflammatory signaling in cell and clinical studies.

Doses are mg of total tocotrienols. The vitamin E UL applies to alpha-tocopherol only, so tocotrienols carry no formal UL. A 2021 meta-analysis of randomized trials pooled tocotrienol supplementation studies on inflammation and oxidative-stress markers, but its abstract does not state a dose range, and no dose-finding source was verified here, so typical amounts are left unset. Fat-soluble; take with a meal. Some evidence suggests large alpha-tocopherol doses reduce tocotrienol uptake, so many products keep alpha-tocopherol low.
Standardization: annatto: ≥90% delta plus gamma tocotrienols; palm TRF: ≥50% total tocotrienols with tocopherols
Source material: annatto seed (Bixa orellana) or palm oil
As supplied: Oil concentrates of varying tocotrienol assay; raw material mass = dose divided by assay

Oil; softgel or liquid preferred. Capsules require a powdered (adsorbed) grade.
Formulation notes
Often formulated apart from high-dose alpha-tocopherol. Share the general vitamin E caution with anticoagulants at high intakes.
