Tribulus Terrestris Extract
Also known as: Tribulus terrestris, puncture vine, gokshura, protodioscin
A fruit and aerial-part extract standardized to steroidal saponins, marketed heavily for testosterone and muscle building. A systematic review of the evidence found that its reputation for raising testosterone in healthy people is not supported by controlled human trials, although some studies report effects on libido and sexual function. It remains popular because of consumer demand, so it is best positioned for libido rather than hormone claims, and confidence in any dose-response is low.
Research summary
Protodioscin and related saponins are proposed to influence androgen receptor density and nitric oxide release, but human hormone changes have not been consistently demonstrated.
