The form of vitamin D the body makes from sunlight and the most effective supplemental form for raising blood levels. It supports calcium absorption, bone health, immune function, and muscle function. Most supplemental D3 is derived from lanolin; a lichen-sourced vegan version exists as a separate ingredient.

NIH ODS — UL is 100 mcg (4,000 IU) per day for adults

RDA is 600 IU (15 mcg) for adults and 800 IU (20 mcg) over age 70. Fat-soluble, so absorption improves when taken with a meal containing fat. 40 IU = 1 mcg. Often paired with vitamin K2. dose_max_studied is capped at the 4,000 IU UL for validation; a 3-year randomized trial in healthy adults (Burt 2019) compared 400, 4,000, and 10,000 IU/day under monitoring, so higher amounts have been studied but sit above the UL.
