An isoquinoline alkaloid isolated from plants such as barberry, goldenseal, and Coptis, supplied as the hydrochloride salt. It is one of the most-studied botanical compounds for glucose and lipid metabolism; meta-analyses of randomized trials in people with type 2 diabetes report meaningful reductions in fasting glucose, HbA1c, and LDL cholesterol. It has become a core ingredient of blood-sugar and metabolic-health formulas, but its drug-interaction profile deserves attention.
