Eggshell Membrane (NEM)
Also known as: NEM, natural eggshell membrane, ESM, BiovaFlex, hydrolyzed eggshell membrane
Eggshell membrane is the thin protein layer between an egg's shell and white. It naturally contains collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycans, and hyaluronic acid. Processed and milled, it is sold as NEM and similar branded ingredients for joint comfort and flexibility. An 8-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 500 mg once daily reported reduced knee pain and stiffness within 10 days, and later trials in active women showed lower exercise-induced joint discomfort. Its low 500 mg dose makes it easy to formulate.
Research summary
Supplies joint-matrix proteins and glycosaminoglycans and appears to lower inflammatory cytokines and cartilage-turnover markers.
Dosage
Daily amounts, of compound.
| Lowest studied | Typical range | Highest studied | Upper limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 mg | 500 mg | 500 mg | — |
500 mg once daily with or without food; this single dose was used across the branded trials. Effects were measured from 10 days onward. No benefit has been shown for higher doses.
Standardization: ≥88% protein; branded grades specify minimum glycosaminoglycan content
Source material: hen eggshell membrane (mechanically separated, milled)
Format suitability
- Capsule
- Powder
- Tablet
- Softgel
- Gummy
- Liquid
Fine, off-white powder with a mild odor; one 500 mg capsule or tablet. Chewables and gummies exist commercially.
Formulation notes
Contains egg protein; requires egg allergen labeling. No other notable conflicts.
- Allergen: egg
