Bifidobacterium infantis (35624)

Bifidobacterium infantis, now classified as B. longum subsp. infantis, specializes in digesting human milk oligosaccharides and dominates the healthy breast-fed infant gut. The adult-focused strain 35624 was studied in a multicenter randomized trial in women with irritable bowel syndrome that compared 100 million, 1 billion, and 10 billion CFU daily in an encapsulated format. It is used in digestive comfort formulas and, as strain EVC001, in infant products. Effective doses in the 35624 program were relatively low, which is unusual among probiotics.

Raw-material weight assumes a 100 billion CFU/g concentrate (10 mg per billion CFU); manufacturers add a 20–50% CFU overage at fill so the label claim holds through shelf life, and the label should state whether CFU are guaranteed at manufacture or at expiry. In the 35624 dose-ranging trial the 1 billion CFU arm outperformed both the lower and higher arms, so more is not necessarily better.
